Delivering ATMPs to the human brain in early phase clinical trials

We work with the NHS and companies running clinical trials to offer cutting-edge treatments for people with brain diseases.

Because the blood-brain barrier blocks most medications from reaching the brain through the blood stream, treatments can’t effectively reach their targets when given intravenously. Instead, these treatments need to be delivered via lumber puncture or directly into the brain using surgically placed devices.

We’re the only centre in the UK (and one of just five worldwide) with the expertise and facilities to safely deliver these treatments. We do this inside an MRI scanner to see exactly where the therapy is going in real-time.

We have active research programs to help us understand and optimise therapy delivery, from advanced MR imaging and modelling, to developing better surgical devices and improving clinical trial design.

It is imperative to ensure that these critical early clinical trials don’t fail because of inadequate delivery, so that the promise of these potentially groundbreaking therapies can be realised for our patients.
